SONIC YOUTH

Sonic Youth é uma banda de rock alternativo norte-americana, formada no ano de 1981, em Nova Iorque. Sua formação atual é Thurston Moore (vocais e guitarra), Lee Ranaldo (vocais e guitarra), Kim Gordon (baixo, guitarra e vocais), Mark Ibold (baixo) e Steve Shelley (bateria). O grupo possui um estilo musical que mistura rock alternativo, elementos de noise, post-punk e composições avant garde. Ícone da música e da cultura alternativa norte-americana, seu estilo é considerado bastante peculiar e criativo, fundamentado em experimentações melódicas, com influências do punk rock e do hardcore.

No inicio de sua carreira, o Sonic Youth foi associado com a cena New Wave de Nova Iorque. Sendo integrada à primeira onda de bandas norte-americanas de noise rock, o Sonic teve sua própria interpretação da filosofia punk, mais focada no estilo "faça você mesmo" do que no som em si. Eles conquistaram um sucesso moderado no mainstream, e são considerados um dos grupos pioneiros do rock alternativo.

O Sonic Youth foi inspirado nas sinfonias de guitarra de Glenn Branca (com o qual boa parte da banda já tocou), no proto-punk de The Stooges, The Velvet Underground e MC5, na poesia punk de Patti Smith, o Krautrock de Can, o psicodélico garage rock do 13th Floor Elevators, assim como compositores avant-garde, como John Cage. Muitas vezes a banda é aclamada por redefinir o que uma guitarra pode fazer, ao utilizar uma variedade de afinações alternativas e modificar o instrumento, com objetos inusitados, como baquetas e chaves de fenda como forma de alterar seu timbre.

Arch Enemy

ARCH ENEMY

Arch Enemy é uma banda sueca de death metal com influências de thrash metal, formada em 1995. Tem uma distinção das outras bandas do gênero, por ter uma mulher como vocalista, o que é muito raro nas bandas de death metal, já que o vocal é gutural.

O Arch Enemy é uma das principais bandas deste subgênero do heavy metal que se convencionou chamar de 'death metal melódico', em virtude principalmente de elementos melódicos provenientes do heavy metal tradicional, do power metal, do heavy rock e até mesmo do hard rock dos anos 70 e 80. Neste sentido, uma das características principais do Arch Enemy são os riffs de guitarra compostos por Michael Amott, que são ao mesmo tempo pesados e melódicos.

Michael Amott era um dos integrantes do Carcass quando do lançamento do álbum Heartwork, de 1993, considerado o precursor do que seria mais tarde chamado de death metal melódico. Michael Amott também já foi integrante das bandas Carnage e Candlemass, e, actualmente, além do Arch Enemy, ele tem uma banda paralela chamada Spiritual Beggars, cujo som é baseado nas bandas de heavy rock dos anos 70, principalmente Deep Purple, Mountain e Captain Beyond; as influências de Black Sabbath da fase de meados e final dos anos 70 também são latentes nos álbuns do Spiritual Beggars.
